Circumstances that made decisions :)

Several years back I wanted to try create flat icons, but I wasn’t able to simply run the script with “make icons” command. I misunderstood what small note about system “PATH” means.

For those interested in generating icons from SVG, probably this will save you

With 2.8 upcoming it’s probably the worst timing for something like that, but when I started a month ago, there wasn’t so big movement in UI and all schedule for 2.8 to production ready version was announced as a long run. So I thought there could be a some benefit anyway.

2.79 UI design doesn’t let you clean UI from all lines, rectangles and other staff, because it ruins visual relations betwen elements. Example …

Default style - frames keeps elements together - "+"/"x" occupy the header

Cleaner, but you don't have a clue what relates to what ...

so some kind of framing is needed,

but it can be in more subtle way ...

"+"/"x" can be visible on mouse over or part of menu

Customizing theme is quite dificult in some areas. Like if you want to attract "Render" or "Play" buttons it highlights "+"/"x" as well.

So I ended up to simplify icons in something we can call “flat” icons, later on I started to draw object shaded so it’s more relevant to call them “monochrome” icons (even there are also used other colours).

Some of the icons are kept in original shape, some of them are redesigned, some of them I don’t like, but I used them anyway to get impression how the whole system will work or not.

Modifiers and forces I skiped for now and probably forever :)

Some icons cross this site are different, since screenshots were took from process.

For editing I use Illustrator so I had to save as PDF and import. Inkscape's SVG format I can't open in Ai.

It means I had to almost reconstruct all icons and I'm not sure what does Ai gradients in Inkscape ...
